As early as the beginning of the 19th century, Interlaken in the Bernese Oberland became famous for its impressive mountains and was visited by well-known contemporaries, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. Its success as a tourist destination was boosted by the expansion of the Bernese Oberland Railways in 1890 and the Jungfrau Railway in 1912.

In winter, guests benefit from Interlaken’s central location and thus the opportunity to choose their favourite every day from the ski areas of the Jungfrau Ski Region (Mürren/Schilthorn, Kleine Scheidegg/Männlichen and Grindelwald-First) or the family-friendly ski areas of Beatenberg and Axalp-Brienz. More than 45 mountain railways, cable cars, chair lifts and ski lifts take athletes to over 200 km of slopes.

Trains to the Jungfrau Region in the direction of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen depart from Interlaken Ost station with connections to the railways to Mürren and on to the Schilthorn and via Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch. From the Grindelwald terminal, the Jungfraujoch can be reached even faster with the Eiger Express, which runs to the Eiger Glacier station. Excursion boats operate on Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, including a historic paddle steamer. Interlaken is located on the „GoldenPass“ panoramic railway line from Montreux on Lake Geneva past the noble holiday resort of Gstaad to Interlaken and on over the Brünig Pass to Lucerne.
