Thanks to the magnificent panorama and the glaciers that once penetrated into the valley basin, Grindelwald attracted its first guests from the end of the 18th century, mainly English. In the middle of the 19th century, the real breakthrough of alpinism took place, local mountain guides climbed the peaks of the region with English tourists. The first ascent of the Eiger, the most difficult in terms of mountaineering, took place in 1858 (north face only in 1938).

There are 80 kilometres of winter hiking trails with views of seven four-thousand-metre peaks and majestic glaciers to choose from, as well as 60 km of toboggan runs, including one of the longest toboggan runs in the Alps from the Faulhorn to the valley with a length of 15 km. Of course, countless other winter sports are possible in Grindelwald.
